Migraine is a common yet debilitating condition which involves a moderate to severe headache, usually presenting as a throbbing pain on either side of the head, and is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and/or sensitivity to light or sound. Although migraines can present themselves at any age, they normally begin in young adulthood and are more prevalent in women. It is estimated that migraine affects 1 in 5 women compared with 1 in 15 men. The severity and frequency of migraines tend to improve with age, however this is not always the case for everyone.

Half of people who experience migraine also have close relatives who also suffer from the condition. This suggests that genetics may also play a role in the development and suffering of migraine.
