Facial Hair

Hirsutism is normally caused by excessive levels of male hormones known as androgens, or by increased sensitivity to these hormones. In the majority of cases, it is a result of polycystic ovary syndrome, but for approximately one in 10 sufferers, there is no obvious trigger. There is evidence to suggest that the problem can sometimes run in families.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends first line treatment for excessive facial hair growth in women (Hirsutism) is Vaniqa (Eflornithine). Vaniqa can be used in women who are not pregnant or breast feeding, and it is only licensed for adults over the age of 19.

It is normally applied twice daily, at least eight hours apart, and should be rubbed in thoroughly whilst avoiding the nose, mouth and eye areas. You can use make up after applying it but there must be a 5 minute gap between application and using cosmetics. The area must not be washed for 4 hours after applying Vaniqa. Results and improvements after using Vaniqa are typically seen at 8 weeks Where improvement with Vaniqa is noticeable, continued application is necessary otherwise hair growth will return to pre-treatment levels within 8 weeks. If no improvement is seen within 4 months then it should be stopped.
