The active ingredient of Nexium tablets, Esomeprazole, is a selective proton pump inhibitor and it belongs to a class of drug known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) which are used in the treatment of acid reflux (GORD). The active ingredient of Nexium tablets, esomeprazole, works to treat symptoms of acid reflux by selectively acting on proton pumps at the surface of gastric parietal cells lining the stomach. These cells are involved in the production of gastric acid and its secretion into the stomach. Esomeprazole inhibits the final stage of this system resulting in reduced gastric acid production and secretion.
