How do Losec MUPS tablets work?

The active ingredient of Losec MUPS 20mg tablets, Omeprazole, is a selective proton pump inhibitor and it belongs to a class of drug known as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). They are used in the treatment of acid reflux (GORD) and heartburn. Acid reflux is caused by two main factors; a build-up of excess acid in the stomach, and a weakening of the lower sphincter muscles of the oesophagus, which work to prevent the escape of stomach acid. Both these factors together result in stomach acid travelling up and into the oesophagus.

Omeprazole works by selectively acting on proton pumps at the surface of gastric parietal cells found lining the stomach. These cells are involved in the production of gastric acid and its secretion into the stomach.
